Which Form Tools Are Actually Hosted in Switzerland?

Short answer, before the detail: the form and survey tools that genuinely store response data in a Swiss data centre are Schweizerform, onlineumfragen.com, Findmind, and any LimeSurvey or Nextcloud Forms instance you install yourself on Swiss infrastructure such as Infomaniak or Hostpoint. Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, Typeform, Jotform and SurveyMonkey do not offer a Swiss region at all. And at least one tool that markets itself in Swiss German — umfrageonline.com, run by enuvo GmbH in Pfäffikon SZ — stores the responses on Amazon Web Services in Ireland and Germany.

This page is a roundup rather than a duel, because “which tool is hosted in Switzerland?” turns out to be three questions wearing one coat: where the response data physically sits, which legal entity you contract with and under which law, and whether the provider can technically read submissions at all. A vendor can pass one of those tests and fail the other two. We go through them separately, name the vendor documentation each claim comes from, and say plainly where Schweizerform is the wrong tool for the job.

Which Form and Survey Tools Are Actually Hosted in Switzerland?

Four options survive the first filter — response data stored in a data centre on Swiss soil, stated by the provider itself:

• Schweizerform — hosted in Switzerland at Infomaniak, operated by a Swiss company, and end-to-end encrypted: responses are encrypted in the respondent's browser and only the holder of the Vault key can decrypt them.
• onlineumfragen.com — onlineumfragen.com GmbH, seat in Sarnen OW. Its terms state that all data, including personal data, survey data and account data, is stored in its own secure data centres in Zurich; the only servers abroad are ping-monitoring servers that transmit and store no non-public data. Certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022.
• Findmind — the educa Navigator, maintained by the Swiss agency for digitalisation in education, lists the storage location as Basel, the contractual partner as Fabian Keller with no sub-processors, applicable law as Swiss law and the place of jurisdiction as St. Gallen. The University of Zurich's BF-Tools directory records it as a CH-server hosted product.
• LimeSurvey or Nextcloud Forms, self-installed on Swiss hosting — Infomaniak offers one-click installs of LimeSurvey and Nextcloud Hub on web hosting in its ISO-27001-certified Swiss data centres; Hostpoint, the largest Swiss web host with more than 1.3 million domains, runs its web hosting and Managed Flex Servers on servers located in Switzerland. Both give you a Swiss home for a survey app you operate yourself.

Everything else on a typical Swiss shortlist fails on residency. That includes tools with a Swiss company behind them, a .ch domain, or German-language marketing — none of which tells you where the database is. How Each Product Positions Itself

Swiss SaaS: Schweizerform, onlineumfragen.com and Findmind

Schweizerform is an encrypted intake layer. Forms are built in EN, DE, FR and IT, responses are encrypted client-side before they leave the respondent's device, and the server stores ciphertext it cannot open. Hosting is at Infomaniak in Switzerland; the AI features for form creation and translation run on Swiss-hosted inference, and form answers are never sent to a model. Aggregate analytics — start rate, drop-off, completion time, device split — work without third-party trackers or cookies. The technical model is described in full on our security page.

onlineumfragen.com is the deepest Swiss survey suite of the three. It positions itself as a professional research platform and states conformity with the GDPR, the German BDSG, the Swiss nDSG and the Austrian DSG, offering a standard processing agreement. Its ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification is a real differentiator, and one Schweizerform does not have. If your procurement checklist literally says “ISO 27001 certified Swiss survey platform”, the honest answer is onlineumfragen.com, not us.

Findmind positions itself at the opposite end: a free, ad-free Swiss survey tool with a premium option. The UZH BF-Tools entry records comprehensive free functions with no participant limit and a one-time premium subscription of CHF 49 per survey. We could not reach substantive documentation on Findmind's encryption at rest, its sub-processors or its current company form — the site renders via JavaScript and returned no content — so we cite only what the educa and UZH directories state. For a club poll or a course evaluation, it is very hard to beat on price.

Self-Hosted on Swiss Infrastructure: LimeSurvey and Nextcloud Forms

Installing LimeSurvey or the Forms app of a self-hosted Nextcloud on Infomaniak or Hostpoint gives you the maximum amount of control: you own the database, you set retention, nothing is shared with a SaaS operator. Be exact about the cost of that. You become the operator, and Art. 8 nDSG makes you responsible for appropriate technical and organisational measures — patching, backups, TLS, access control, breach detection. And the nuance that matters most: a self-hosted install stores responses in clear text in your own database, so a compromised server exposes everything. Swiss hosting is not encryption. The Tools That Look Swiss but Are Not Swiss-Hosted

umfrageonline.com is operated by enuvo GmbH, Huobstrasse 10, 8808 Pfäffikon SZ — a genuinely Swiss company. But its own processing agreement states that data collected via the service, including participant answers, is stored and processed exclusively in European data centres in Ireland and/or Germany operated by Amazon Web Services EMEA SARL, with the databases replicated across three Irish data centres. LimeSurvey Cloud offers hosting in Australia, Canada, Finland, Germany, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the USA — Switzerland is not on the list — and the provider is LimeSurvey GmbH in Hamburg. Formular-Chef, which Swiss searchers frequently pair with Swiss form tools, is a German free form service operated at formular-chef.de with no Swiss entity and no Swiss hosting claim; submissions are delivered by e-mail, spreadsheet or database, with PGP optional.

Swiss Data Centre, Swiss Company, Swiss Jurisdiction — Three Different Claims

These three get collapsed into one bullet point on almost every vendor page, and they come apart constantly. umfrageonline.com is a Swiss company whose response data is in Ireland. A self-hosted LimeSurvey at Hostpoint puts the data in Switzerland under your own entity, but the software vendor is German. Google Cloud has run a Zurich region since 2019 — which is Google Cloud Platform, not Google Workspace, and gives Google Forms no Swiss residency option whatsoever.

The EDÖB's guidance on cloud processing sets the frame: the cloud provider is normally a processor within the meaning of Art. 9 nDSG, the customer remains responsible, and where the outsourcing involves disclosure abroad the adequacy of every processing country has to be examined. That is why the sub-processor list matters more than the marketing headline — a Swiss contracting party with an Irish processor is a cross-border disclosure that you have to document.

The question none of these three answers is the one that decides how much the others matter: can the provider read the responses? On onlineumfragen.com, Findmind, umfrageonline.com, LimeSurvey Cloud and every international platform in this comparison, the answer is technically yes — data is encrypted in transit and at rest with provider-held keys, which is a real and sensible control but not a barrier to the provider itself. On a self-hosted install, you can read everything, which is exactly the point. On Schweizerform, no one but the Vault key holder can, because decryption happens in your browser. Head-to-Head: Swiss Data Residency Compared

Read the last column together with the first. Schweizerform and a self-hosted install both prevent a SaaS operator from reading submissions, but for opposite reasons — we cannot decrypt, and a self-hoster has no operator at all. Everything in between is a normal, lawful processor relationship governed by a contract rather than by mathematics.

Which Survey Tools Offer Swiss Data Residency — and Which Only Look Swiss?

The Microsoft row is the one that catches Swiss organisations out, and it deserves precision rather than a slur: Switzerland is an Advanced Data Residency local region geography, so a Swiss tenant can hold Exchange, SharePoint and Teams data in Switzerland — but Forms is listed among the additional services that carry no data-residency commitment, so it lands in the EU/EFTA macro region regardless. Does Swiss Hosting Actually Keep Your Data Under Swiss Law?

What Art. 16 and 17 nDSG Require Before Data Leaves Switzerland

The Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (DSG, SR 235.1, in force since 1 September 2023) does not forbid sending personal data abroad. Art. 16 permits disclosure abroad where the Federal Council has determined that the destination state's legislation ensures adequate protection, or where the transfer is covered by an international treaty, standard data protection clauses, or binding corporate rules. The list of adequate states is Annex 1 to the Data Protection Ordinance (DSV, SR 235.11). Art. 17 adds narrow exceptions — express consent, performance of a contract, overriding public interest, protection of life or physical integrity, publicly accessible data and public registers.

So “the servers are in the USA” is not, by itself, an unlawful arrangement. What it is, is an arrangement you must document: a transfer mechanism, a processing agreement, and a record of why the mechanism applies. Choosing a Swiss-hosted provider removes that documentation burden rather than resolving a prohibition. Art. 8 still requires security appropriate to the risk wherever the data sits, Art. 24 requires you to notify the FDPIC as quickly as possible of a breach likely to cause a high risk, and the criminal provisions in Art. 60–62 reach unlawful cross-border disclosure, unauthorised engagement of a processor and failure to meet minimum security requirements, with fines of up to CHF 250,000. The CLOUD Act and the Swiss–U.S. Data Privacy Framework

Two facts sit in tension here, and both are true. On 14 August 2024 the Federal Council recognised the United States as providing adequate protection for companies certified under the Swiss–U.S. Data Privacy Framework, with the DSV amendment in force from 15 September 2024 — so transfers to a DPF-certified US firm need no standard clauses or transfer impact assessment. At the same time, 18 U.S.C. § 2713, added by the CLOUD Act in 2018, obliges a US electronic-communication or remote-computing service provider to preserve and disclose content and records in its possession, custody or control regardless of whether the information is located within or outside of the United States. Adequacy is a data-protection judgement; the CLOUD Act is a jurisdictional reach over the provider.

What the «swiss hosting» Label Actually Certifies

The «swiss hosting» label, launched by Swiss Made Software in August 2020, is the closest thing to a checkable shorthand. It requires that the company is Swiss-owned and headquartered in Switzerland, that applications and personal or business data are hosted in a data centre in Switzerland, that data protection and security are subject to Swiss law, and that only the customer and Swiss authorities may access the data. Infomaniak — an independent Swiss company founded in Geneva in 1994, majority-owned by its employees, with sites in Geneva and Zurich — carries it alongside ISO 27001:2022, ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 50001:2018. Pricing: What Swiss Hosting Costs

Schweizerform runs Free, Pro at CHF 19 per month and Business at CHF 49 per month. Swiss hosting and end-to-end encryption are not a tier — they are how the product works on every plan, including Free. There is no residency upsell because there is no other region to sell. The other Swiss options price very differently. Findmind is free with no participant limit, with a one-time premium subscription of CHF 49 per survey according to the UZH BF-Tools directory — for a one-off, low-sensitivity survey that is genuinely hard to argue with, and paying a monthly subscription for zero-knowledge encryption would be over-engineering. onlineumfragen.com is a professional research suite and prices accordingly; check its current tariff directly. Self-hosting on Infomaniak or Hostpoint costs a web hosting plan plus your own time — and the time is the real line item, because patching, backups and access control become your job.

On the international platforms, regional hosting is a plan feature. Google's data regions require a supported Workspace edition. Typeform's EU data hosting is described in its documentation as belonging to its higher, custom tiers. SurveyMonkey's EU data centre is limited to Enterprise and GetFeedback Direct, and accounts opened before 2019 cannot migrate at all. Jotform's EU data centre is available more broadly and auto-enabled for EU-created accounts, with configurable residency marketed for Enterprise. In every one of these cases you are paying to move data to the EU — none of them sells you Switzerland.

Which Tool Fits Which Use Case

Pick a Swiss-Hosted SaaS When…

…you want Swiss residency without becoming an infrastructure operator. Within that group the split is clean. Choose onlineumfragen.com for serious survey research where questionnaire logic, panel handling and statistics matter, and where an ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certificate is on the requirement list. Choose Findmind for quick, low-sensitivity, budget-zero surveys. Choose Schweizerform when the submissions contain something you would not want a provider to hold in readable form — patient details, employee reports, whistleblowing, client onboarding, anything touching professional secrecy under Art. 321 StGB, which binds not only the professional but their auxiliary persons.

Pick Self-Hosting on Swiss Infrastructure When…

…control is the requirement and you have the operational capacity to back it. You own the schema, the retention, the export format and the upgrade path, and there is no processor in the chain at all. The honest cost: LimeSurvey or Nextcloud patching, database backups, TLS renewal, access reviews and breach detection are now yours under Art. 8 nDSG, and the responses sit in clear text in your database. Choose it because you want that control, not because it sounds safer by default.

Stay on Google, Microsoft or SurveyMonkey When…

…the data is low-sensitivity and the tool is already paid for. Microsoft Forms for an internal lunch poll in a Swiss tenant is a perfectly reasonable choice: the data stays in the EU/EFTA macro region, transport and at-rest encryption apply, and nobody needs a new procurement cycle. The precise, narrow problem is that Forms carries no data-residency commitment, so a tenant that bought Advanced Data Residency for Exchange and SharePoint has not bought it for Forms. That is a documentation fact worth knowing before the poll turns into an HR intake form.

When You Might Honestly Use Both

Most Swiss organisations end up with a split, and it is a sensible one: the incumbent suite for internal, low-stakes collection, and a Swiss-hosted encrypted tool for the narrow set of forms where the content is sensitive or where a supervisory authority might one day ask where the data was. Running two tools is not a failure of consolidation — it is scoping. It is also worth saying where Schweizerform is not the answer at all: we are an encrypted intake layer, not a survey-research platform and not a case-management system. No panel management, no weighted samples, no longitudinal analysis, no on-premise deployment, and no ISO 27001 certificate. If any of those is the requirement, buy the tool that does it and use us for the forms that need the encryption.
